Week 18 Step back – Martin Scarland

Oh Lord God I pray that you will make me a good example to my friends and family. I pray that they will see you in me. And want to turn to you. And receive the joy only you can give.

Give me wisdom in how I live my everyday life.

Reading the ruthless elimination of hurry. Thinking I should make a small change to my daily schedule to help relieve pressure and make life a bit easier. Makes sense to me.

Three weeks back at work and all I have is a stressed out, tired and grumpy version of me. I think I see something wrong.

As I reduce my appointments by a third this week, I am feeling empowered that I am in control. O God I pray that you take my shuffle in your direction to make it a bigger thing for you and maybe help me to shuffle even closer to you. Make this thing your thing not my thing God. Hold my hand in this lord.

A prayer from the fifth century AD by Augustine of Hippo:

Grant me, even me, my dearest Lord,
to know you, and love you, and rejoice in you…
Let the love of you grow every day more and more in me,
that my joy may be full in you.*

Psalm 84:10-11

A single day in your courts
is better than a thousand anywhere else!
I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God
than live the good life in the homes of the wicked.
For the Lord God is our sun and our shield.
He gives us grace and glory.
The Lord will withhold no good thing
from those who do what is right.

1 Peter 4:7-11

The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
